Hello again.
Last week we dropped part I of this creator’s roundtable and you all had a lot of nice things to say about it. So thank you for that. And last week was also the week Juni’s book MONKEY MEAT: THE SUMMER BATCH #1 came out. If you hurry you can maybe still grab a copy from your local comic shop. This week it is time for Deniz’s new book. ASSORTED CRISIS EVENTS #1 is in shops right now. You should go grab it. And while you’re there make sure you tell them you want Tyler’s upcoming series YOU’LL DO BAD THINGS. And I guess you can say my book WE’RE TAKING EVERYONE DOWN WITH US. Not trying to be pushy here though. You do what you think is best.
If you’re heading to the comic shop this week, it’s worth noting that DC VS VAMPIRES: WWV #7 is in shops today too. The new big bad arrives in a big way. I don’t want to spoil who he is but… He is.
In addition to Otto and I doing our normal insanity, there is more great Animal Man from Joey Esposito and Pasquale Qualano. Go grab it. Enjoy it. And brace yourself for whats coming.
So in regular “what the fuck are we doing as a country?!” news, it seems that British cartoonist R.E. Burke was visiting the U.S. as a cultural exchange program. Last month she was taken hostage by ICE and is being held without trial, criminal charges being pressed, or chance to return home. I don’t think I need to explain how this is fucking terrifying for anyone with empathy, anyone who thinks the exchange of culture and ideas is important, anyone who thinks rights and due process matter, or anyone who wants to travel in their lifetimes.
Here is a brief explanation of what’s going on from her family-
‘While traveling, Becky was staying with host families which she found through a cultural exchange co-ordination website. She helps with chores in exchange for accommodation - something loads of backpackers do to help funds and gain cultural experience. Host families will often use this opportunity to share cultural experiences with travellers and not require anything in return other than helping out as a typical housemate would.
But when she tried to cross into Canada, she was denied entry due to them perceiving this as requiring a work VISA and told to return to the U.S.
Instead of a quick fix, she was detained by U.S. immigration authorities and has now been stuck in a detention centre since 26th February. She is facing tough conditions, having had all her possessions removed, only eating cold beans and potatoes (she is vegan) and is only allowed visitors through a screen and phone.’
They’ve set up a gofundme to get her food and supplies while in jail, help pay her legal fees, and hopefully help pay for her airfare home. If you can, please consider helping Becky get home. This is fucking shameful.
That’s it from me.
Stay safe. Take care of each other. Back to normal podcastin’ next week.
