IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, the Supple Boiz, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books!
Our theme song is “Where’s the Poison” by Summer People.
Enjoy!
Hi again.
Back with another episode of our little “podcast” as I like to call it. This was a very fun one for me. I’ve known Alex for almost as long as I’ve been trying to make comics. First as a staffer at DC, then Archie, then as a comic creator on books like ARCHIE MEETS KISS, then as novelist on his Pete Fernandez mystery series. In short, he is a man who wears many hats. He has been a fierce supporter of my work, and that has always meant so much to me. But it probably shouldn’t because he is a fierce supporter of everyone. He is always quick to give praise, lending a hand, passing on some kind words of encouragement, or just show up for people. He’s just an incredibly kind person, it’s not specific to me, which is fine… I guess.
It’s been a real joy watching Alex’s writing work continue to gain fans with every new project. And his brilliant novel SECRET IDENTITY really showed the world what a major new talent he is and proved an absolute must read for fans of comic book history as well. And now he is co-writing one of the all time great comic detectives, DICK TRACY, in a book that is sure to be one of the must fun titles of the year. Let your local comic shop know you need to read it.
And sign up for Alex’s newsletter to stay on top of all all the news he wants you to have.
So it turns out tomorrow is my birthday. Weird. I actually feel so incredibly lucky to get to do this thing that I love and a huge part (or maybe all of it) is thanks to the people who take the time to read stuff I write. So rather than ask you all to send me gifts, which I did consider, I’ve decided to do things the other way. I’m offering 25% off everything (except 7”s) in our webstore. Just enter the code: Eatsomecake at checkout for the discount.
And we’re going to donate 100% the money from whatever you buy to Anera for their work helping people in Palestine right now. If you don’t want to buy some comics from me but still want to help you can donate directly here:
What they do: Anera, which has no political or religious affiliation, works with partners in Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan to provide emergency relief as well as long-term solutions to humanitarian crises. They are currently working to respond to the immediate needs of refugees displaced by the ongoing conflict. For example, they are distributing food baskets and hygiene kits to families living in shelters, and also ensuring that shelters are clean and properly maintained. Furthermore, they are providing health care out of mobile clinics, including professional treatments and medicine.
Since their inception, Anera has helped millions of vulnerable people in the Middle East to live with purpose and hope. For example, in 2022 alone, they delivered more than $100 million in sustainable development and relief programs to help communities confront ongoing challenges. In response to the current conflict, they have distributed over 4 million meals, 19,850 hygiene kits, and 607,963 medical kits to refugees living in shelters.
I’m having to post things like this way too frequently, which should be an indication of how tough it is out there for comic shops right now.
The great Megabrain Comics in Rhinebeck, NY is in need of some real help. As you can see by the campaign, it is a beloved institution and part of the community and they could really use your support.
You can donate to their Gofundme and help keep a great comic shop going. Or, if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t like giving people money without getting something in return (besides good vibes) you can buy some comics from their site and have them shipped to you anywhere in the world! Magical.
Either way, you are doing good work and you will be awarded 10 Ashcan Points!
I guess that’s it for me.
Stay safe. Take care of each other. I’m gonna go listen to the Dick Tracy soundtrack.
