IDEAS DON'T BLEED episode fifty-one | Becky Cloonan, part one
Chapter 137: Artoo Deetoo, it is you, it is you!
WELCOME BACK TO IDEAS DON’T BLEED!
This week, we’re joined by Becky Cloonan (Wonder Woman / The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys) as we discuss her comics origins, her experience in animation, her new DSTLRY series Somna, and more!
IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, the Supple Boiz, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books!
Our theme song is “Where’s the Poison” by Summer People.
Happy Labor Day to all who appreciate those who labor. And, really, what is wrong with you if you don’t? Now remember to put all your white clothes away because… umm… laborers hate white clothes?
Onto the podcast. There are a lot of nice things I could say about our guest, artist/writer Becky Cloonan, but really I don’t need to say anything. If you are familiar with Becky’s work you know she is a rare talent. Her work is always unique and gorgeous. If you aren’t familiar with her work, you should go pick up her work in books like BY CHANCE OR BY PROVIDENCE, TRUE LIVES OF THE FABULOUS KILLJOYS, AMERICAN VIRGIN, GOTHAM ACADEMY, and get excited for her upcoming book from new publisher dstlry - SOMNA!
But really, there is a revelation about 5 minutes into this episode that blew my mind so fully that I am still recovering from it. Becky went from being a guest I was very excited for to OUR MOST SPECIAL GUEST EVER! I hope you are as flabbergasted as I am.
So this is a big week for people on our podcast who aren’t me. Superstar co-host Griffin Sheridan and other co-host Ethan Parker have their comics writing debut out on Wednesday.
The great KILL YOUR DARLINGS #1 from the great Image Comics drops and if you have ever liked our podcast, or even if you disliked it, you are obligated to go buy a copy. They’re really nervous about the book coming out so make sure to send them nice messages if you like it. And you probably will because it’s good.
And if you happen to be at Chicago, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, Detroit, Grand Rapids II, Phoenix, Glendale, or Tuscon, you can go see Griffin and Ethan and get your books signed. And who knows? I might even be at some of these. (I won’t.)
Now, I know you’re all looking at these signing schedules and thinking 'Wow, Griffin’s doing 5 signings and Ethan is only doing 3. Griffin must really be better.’ I know you’re thinking this because I thought it too. But not so fast. If you look more closely you’ll see Ethan has 16 hours of signings, while Griffin only has 15. So clearly Ethan is better and Griffin barely cares about the book. Who knew?
Anyway, go see them. Get your stuff signed. Tell them you only bought the book because of the podcast, so I feel better about my role in all this.
.That’s it for me.
Stay safe. Take care of each other. Don’t let the great Satan tempt you with the Western culture.
