WELCOME BACK TO IDEAS DON’T BLEED!
This week, we’re joined by W. Maxwell Prince (Swan Songs / Haha) as we discuss his comics origins, writing scripts through non-traditional methods, his Image Comics series Ice Cream Man, and more!
IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, Ethan S. Parker, Griffin Sheridan’s memory, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books!
Our theme song is “Where’s the Poison” by Summer People.
Enjoy!
Hello again.
We’re back for our final podcast of Spooky Season 2024™. And what better guest to have be spooky with us than writer of stories about spooky ice cream men and spooky clowns, W. Maxwell Prince. W. tends to not do a lot of press, so I really appreciate him taking the time to chat with us for this. The perks of starting off your comic career alongside super talented people is that later, when you’re all successful, you can annoy your old friends with favor requests and they can’t really say no. This is what those other craft podcasts won’t tell you about making friends!
Anyway, he’s great. Fun chat. And if you haven’t read ICE CREAM MAN, HAHA, or SWAN SONGS I highly recommend you fix that right away. Truly some of the most interesting stuff going in comics
I was planning to post about one of my favorite publishers and comic shops today and then last night, to my horror, I open
’s excellent newsletter to find out he beat me to it. (Sidenote: if you’re not reading Brian’s newsletter and amazingly erotic and erotically amazing series with Niko Henrichon- SPECTATORS -you need to fix that right now by clicking here.) Anyway, my new years resolution was just because people who are better and more popular than me do something first, it shouldn’t stop me from doing it too. I get weirdly specific in my resolutions. Anyway, here goes.Silver Sprocket are an amazing publisher doing some of the most funny, weird, beautiful, helpful, smart, queer, cool, and crucial comics around. They also have an amazing shop in San Francisco where you can grab their books and books from tons of other people making smart and cool comics. But running a publisher and a shop are both really hard things to do, so in order to secure their future Silver Sprocket is doing some fundraising!
There are lots of ways you can support them, such as buying prints from amazing folks like Michael DeForge, Jenn Woodall, Caroline Cash, Tillie Walden, Cam Marshall, and more!
You can also buy books directly from them. If you’re looking for suggestions I would strongly recommend WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE CASTLE by E.M. Carroll, ABORTION PILL ZINE by Isabella Rotman, Sage Coffey & Marnie Galloway, PEEPEE POOPOO by Caroline Cash, and MR. BOOP by Alec Robbins.
But the biggest way, and the coolest, to support Silver Sprocket is to become a member. Until October 31st (spooky) you can pledge a monthly subscription to them and they will either ship or email you EVERYTHING THEY PUBLISH! Plus lots of cool bonus perks and extra goodies. Such a cool idea and a great way to support such a vital presence in comics. And, if you’re like me and often forget about stuff as soon as you order it, you’ll get a surprise box of cool stuff every month that you can pretend is from a secret admirer. Hard to argue with that.
So go support the fine folks at Silver Sprocket and get yourself good stuff in the process.
Over on our underloved Youtube channel we continue posting older episodes of the podcast for your viewing/listening pleasure. This week is Part II with one of my favorite writers in all of comics- Christopher Sebela.
I will once again make my statement that Chris is not only among the best “high concept” writers working in comics, he’s among the best in any medium. He has never had an idea for a book that I wasn’t wildly in awe and marginally jealous of. And then on top of that he writes the hell out of them. If you haven’t, make sure to check out CROWDED, HIGH CRIMES, HEARTTHROB, SHANGHAI RED, HOUSE AMOK, TEST, SHORT ORDER CROOKS, DEAD DUDES, and more. And over on his website you can get these books from him and even grab his amazing zines like I LIVED IN A CLOWN MOTEL and POOL DISASTER. You can’t afford NOT to buy them.
…Because you deserve good things.
That’s it for me.
Stay safe. Take care of each other. Give out comics for Halloween!
