IDEAS DON'T BLEED episode one hundred thirteen | Nick Spencer, part one

Chapter 203: You can call me Luke!

WELCOME BACK TO IDEAS DON’T BLEED!

This week, we’re joined by Nick Spencer (Morning Glories / The Amazing Spider-Man) as we discuss his comics origins, his role in the Substack comics revolution, building the universe of 3 Worlds / 3 Moons, and more!

IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, Ethan S. Parker, Griffin Sheridan’s vibes, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books!

Our theme song is “Where’s the Poison” by Summer People.

Enjoy!

So, heard any good news this past week? Like anything at all? I’d really take anything you got…

Well then. Moving on.

Very excited about this week’s show. I like to go into it a lot because it makes him wildly uncomfortable, but Nick Spencer is the reason this podcast exists, this newsletter exists, and starting early next year a bunch of new comics exist. So we’ve tried to have him on the show a bunch and he’s big-timed us a bunch. But no more! We are nothing if not annoying and he finally gave up.

If you’ve never read any of Nick’s books I would really recommend some of his wonderful creator owned series like THE FIX, MORNING GLORIES, EXISTENCE 2.0, BEDLAM, FORGETLESS, SHUDDERTOWN, or INFINITE VACATION. He’s also written some great stuff at Marvel, DC, and Archie I guess.

OR

You can support his newest project,

which he makes with the amazing Mike Huddleston, the spectacular Mike Del Mundo, and friendly neighborhood Jonathan Hickman. If you haven’t been following along with their Substack you’re missing not only one of the most impressive pieces of sci-fi world building in a long time, and one of the most fascinating experiments in pulling back the curtain on storytelling, but you’re also missing out on some wildly good comics. But have no fear latecomers, because right now you can get their upcoming graphic novel, a whole bunch of their books, or you can ever get everything they’ve made so far, all in beautiful hardcovers, delivered right to your door!

3W/3M on Kickstarter!

So go subscribe, back the Kickstarter, and enjoy some radically hard sci-fi insanity.

And listen to the podcast. I think he calls me an asshole under his breath at one point.

This week, one of the best comic conventions in the world is happening. The amazing Thought Bubble in Harrowgate, England.

Q: WILL YOU BE THERE?!

A: Sure won’t. But I have sent my more talented half in my stead. Tyler Boss will be at table C-36 all weekend, signing things, maybe selling some pages if he remembered to bring any, maybe doing sketches if he feels like it. I don’t really know what he’s doing, but he’ll be there. Bring him copies of 4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK, WHAT’S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE?, DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, or if you want to get on his good side, DEAD DOG’S BITE. And bring him an M&S White Chocolate Milk in my honor. He won’t want it, but make him drink it anyway.

Also, our miracle letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou will be at table D-26. I’d point it out on the map but I stole this image from Tyler and he cropped it before you got to Hass’s table. But you get the general idea. Walk up.

Bring him stuff to sign too. He actually might have copies of our book.

And over on our wildly exciting Youtube channel, we are flashing back to the time we were joined by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing. They are the excellent writers on the new NYX book, but we don’t talk about that here because it was taped well before that existed. But listen to them say a bunch of stuff about Star Trek that I don’t understand.

It was a good time.

Well that’s it for me.

Stay safe. Take care of each other. Seriously.
