WELCOME BACK TO IDEAS DON’T BLEED!
This week, Tyler Boss (Dead Dog’s Bite / What’s the Furthest Place From Here?) returns to the show as we discuss his deteriorating creative and personal relationships with Matthew Rosenberg, finding inspiration in classic giallo films, his upcoming Image Comics series You’ll Do Bad Things, and more!
IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, the Supple Boiz, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books!
Our theme song is “Where’s the Poison” by Summer People.
Enjoy!
New year! New podcast! Old guest! Oldie but a goody. It’s Tyler Boss, my partner in many things. But is Tyler here to talk about the work we did on WE CAN NEVER GO HOME, or 12 REASONS TO DIE, or 4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK, or RAZORBLADES, or WHAT’S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE? or even DC VS. VAMPIRES? Nope. Tyler has once again decided to make a really amazing comic without me. Tyler’s upcoming book YOU’LL DO BAD THINGS is a brilliant love letter to slasher films, true crime, and Giallo horror. The amazing Adriano Turtulici is on art duties for this one and, I know I say a lot of nice things, this is one of my favorite comics I’ve read in years. It is truly a strange, creepy, funny, surreal joy. In this episode we talk a bit about the great David Lynch, who we lost the other day. And I don’t say this lightly, but Tyler truly is a student of Lynch’s work. He has created something with all of the strangeness, the heart, and the dread that Mr. Lynch brought to the world. The book is truly a love letter to the beauty we find in the weirdest people and places. I may be over-sentimentalizing, but I truly do love this book and am happy things like this can still be born into a world full of so much darkness and loss.
So listen to the podcast, check out the preview for the book here courtesy our friends at AIPT, and then let your local comic shop know you need a copy.
Also did you notice that part in the podcast where I couldn’t remember the word radiator? That was cool.
While we’re talking about stuff that is cool and wonderful, our friends at the amazing Brooklyn comic shop / record shop Vinyl Fantasy could use some love in these awful times. If you’re in NYC they are a must visit shop. But if you’re not, you’re still in luck because they ship worldwide. They have an amazing selection of indie comics, punk and hardcore records, and just cool shit.
If you don’t know what to get, here are some things they carry that I think should be in every home.
DAWN RUNNER by Ram V, Evan Cagle, Dave Stewart, and co. Giant robot goodness from some of the best folks making comics right now.
THE COLLECTED CRIMEHOT by Alec Robbins. Hilarious and weird as shit sci-fi crime goodness.
THE ACME NOVELTY LIBRARY DATEBOOK COLLECTION by Chris Ware. One of the greatest living cartoonists completes a years long trip into his world. As brilliant as it is ephemeral.
Guided Tour by HIGH VIS. UK post-hardcore, post-punk outfit that continues to expand what they do and made one of the best records of 2024.
s/t by SKINHEAD. One of my current favorite bands. Somehow both a parody of super macho hardcore and skinhead culture and also very much those things. Catchy hooks and surprisingly clever accounts of violence make this not for everyone, but if you get it you get it.
No Depression In Heaven by MIDWIFE. A beautiful, haunting record that is as much atmosphere as it is the music. An album like overhearing the soundtrack to some else’s dreams.
Anyway, they have a ton of cool comics and records and zines and gifts and you should support them so we can continue to have nice things in 2025.
Over on Youtube the tour through the back catalog of IDEAS DON’T BLEED brings us to Part II of our chat with the great
. Give it a listen. Celebrate Declan and all his greatness. Like and subscribe. And tell your friends. Just give them a call. Stay in touch with the people you love. The world is too cruel not to.
That’s it for me.
