WELCOME BACK TO IDEAS DON’T BLEED!
This week, we’re joined by Ryan North (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl / Dinosaur Comics) as we discuss his comics origins, writing “choose-your-own-adventure” versions of Shakespeare classics, taking over writing duties on The Fantastic Four, and more!
IDB is an all-new weekly podcast presented by Ashcan Press and featuring Matthew Rosenberg, the Supple Boiz, and wonderful guests from the world of comic books!
Our theme song is “Where’s the Poison” by Summer People.
Enjoy!
Hello again.
Time for another episode of our beloved acceptable podcast IDEAS DON’T BLEED, or if you’re more formal, IDEAS DO NOT BLEED. I was very excited to welcome the great Ryan North to the show for many reasons. To start with, he’s very tall and that’s cool. He’s very Canadian and that means he’s to nice to turn me down when I ask him to come on. But most importantly he’s very talented. Besides writing a lot of comics I really love like UNBEATABLE SQUIRREL GIRL, DANGER AND OTHER UNKNOWN RISKS, and the brilliant adaptation of SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE, Ryan has written the brilliant and sort of unhinged webcomic DINOSAUR COMICS using the exact same panels for the last 20+ years. He has also co-written a couple choose your own adventures with William Shakespeare, and a couple How To books for the aspiring global conquerer or time traveller. Also Ethan just wanted to talk to him about Star Trek and I need to throw him some bones sometimes.
Ryan can currently be enjoyed as the writer of the fascinating new run of FANTASTIC FOUR, in comic shops everywhere. And you can read his quite enjoyable newsletter right…
And seriously, if you have never read their adaptation of SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE, you owe it to yourself. Book is brilliant.
And over on the YouTubes is Part II of our “Classic” podcast with special guest Alex Paknadel. We aren’t talking about it here, because “Classic” is our code for “Old”, but Alex is the writer on the upcoming Marvel Comics series SENTINELS about America’s favorite bad boy robots.
So listen to this lovely interview, pretend we talked about SENTINELS, and then get to your local comic shop and preorder yourself a copy.
That’s it for me.
Stay safe. Take care of each other. I can’t even remember what Griffin looked like anymore.
