The Ballad of Tyler and Courtney’s car has a vaguely satisfying conclusion!
The Mailbag opens!
Jams!
As some of you may remember from last week’s newsletter, my partner in WHAT’S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE? and 4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK, Mr. Tyler Boss, and his wonderful partner in life, Ms. Courtney Menard, had their Kia stolen by a gang of bored teenagers unironically calling themselves the Kia Boyz. In the car were a whole lot of copies of Tyler’s books, some of Courtney’s art, and all the original pages from WHAT’S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE? #12. Since last week we’ve had some exciting developments.
Good news- car was found!
Bad news- car was totaled!
Good news- art and books were in the car!
Bad news- art and books were doused in gasoline!
Since the news got out that they lost their car and a bunch of art, a bunch of you were kind enough to order some zine and prints from Courtney’s webstore which was incredibly nice. I’m hopeful she got to watch some truly terrible movies while she packed up your orders.
Also some of you reached out to me and/or Tyler and ask if he has a paypal or patreon or something since he has to buy a new car. That was very kind and made him super self conscious and annoyed at me, which was funny. He isn’t big on having people help him.
And that brings us to now. After some cleaning, some airing out, and some careful examination, Tyler has determined that the pages from WTFPFH? #12 are 100% fine! (Thank you leather portfolio book!). There are also a few books that, while dinged up, avoided getting gassed. And Tyler, being a person of immeasurable kindness, has decided that the best use of the notoriety is to sell the pages on the cheap and donate the money to charity.
All pages from the issue are going for $100 each, in the hopes that some people who can’t normally afford original art might be able to get some. Tyler will then be donating 100% of the proceeds to local charities with the goal of raising $1,250 for the Massachusetts Ave Project and $1,250 for Locust Street Arts. Both are community programs in Buffalo with the mission to create a space for the same underprivileged kids who might otherwise become Kia Boyz. So if you want to own some original art at a price it won’t be offered at again, or if you just want to support some good causes, or you just want to buy stuff that got stolen and then unstolen, now is your chance.
The pages will go on sale Wednesday the 28th at 9AM (I’m assuming EST?) so set your alarms tonight. Tyler also decided to throw in some of the books that were in the car for super cheap, with original sketches in them. These are now called the “I Got Taken For A Ride By The Kia Boyz” editions. So grab yourself some of these very rare “variants” if that’s more your thing.
And, of course, if you aren’t in the market for stolen books and original art you can always donate directly to the Massachusetts Ave Project and Locust Street Arts. Both are great organizations working with underprivileged youth in Buffalo, NY and they could use all the support they can get.
As threatened yesterday, I have decided to start answering more questions from you all. Blazefh was first out of the gate with a question, so they get to go first-
for the question box... in issue 1 of WTFPFH the last splash page shows a buried Millennium Falcon. How did it get there?
A very good question, but not 100% accurate. The ship you see is not actually the Millennium Falcon. And I’m not just saying that because we don’t own the rights to use that and really don’t want to get sued by Lucasfilm. If you look closely you can see clearly that in no way is the ship a Corellian YT-1300 Light Freighter.
It does look a little bit like a YT-2400 Light Freighter, sort of like Dash Rendar’s Outrider. But that is just a coincidence, I’m sure.
As to how it got there, there are 2 different answers to that question. Why the ship is crashed there in terms of the story is something that we will talk about both in the book (maybe) and on here at a later date. Or, the real world answer to the question of how it got on the page is that Tyler is a weirdo and wanted to make me laugh.
And remember- If you have questions for me you can reply to this email or leave a comment below.
If you’re lucky I might just evasively half-ass my way through your question like I did Blazefh’s!
Delivered without comment.
That’s it for me.
Stay safe. Take care of each other. Buy yourself a nice drawing.

Oh man!!! Going home and going down the rabbit hole of starship evolution in galaxies that could be far far away! Thank you for the answer(s). Alarm set for Kia Boyz o’clock! and researching if “The Club” is making a come back.
Hey, a couple related questions.
1) Before quitting your day job, how much of the money you made from comics did you invest back into your career, in terms of paying artists, travel expenses, etc.?
2) How did you determine you were earning enough from writing to go full time?
