Thanks for this. I don’t get people complaining about what they don’t like. There’s people out there who enjoy books that I don’t, and that’s great. It’s just not for me. I was saddened by so many people’s schadenfreude over The Marvels box office. It likely kept people away who would enjoy it. My kids and I both thought it was a fun film. I think negativity just keeps people away in general. I try to advocate for the things I love, and leave what I don’t like for the people who do love it. Things would be boring if everyone was into all the same stuff.

Love this. Will also add... try new things. I actively try to pick up one new book a month that is totally out of my comfort zone. A new creator. A new genre. A new character.

Thanks for being normal about it. I'm sitting out the discourse too—everyone gets emotionally invested in spinning their wheels in the mud and even claim there's a moral dimension to posting mad all day. I'm content to put my head down and work on three different books for 2024 and let everyone else think they can solve for the fans and creators they hate in this industry.

Thanks for this, Matt. Initially I skimmed past the comics discourse stuff because I'm just...so... exhausted. But then I went back to it and really appreciated reading your thoughts.

That said, I WOULD be interested in reading about your thoughts on the current comic store model. I know all my LCS are 90% back issues, and it doesn't feel like much space is given to new comics (or manga?), and I'd love to hear about ways you think comic stores could embrace new business practice/focuses, or if you think the model is working as it should.

Thanks as always for a thoughtful update, and happy holidays!

Thanks for updates / thoughts on all the hubub. I feel similar on your recs, but frequently wondering what I can do to recommend more widely. I think there's a dearth of places normies or potential readers would encounter them. In the meantime, just focusing on friends and good reads (and to a lesser extent social media because my following is basically just friends I'd talk to anyway).

Looking forward to everything coming down the pipe. Happy holidays / new year!

Thanks for your thoughts on the current state of things. I’ve been collecting for almost fifty years now. Obviously I’m a dedicated collector, but, more importantly, a fan. Some of the awful things I have read recently about comics, the comics community and comic book industry is enough to keep me away from certain creators. There has always been a certain level of intensity with some fans, but I almost feel like I’m attending a political rally every time I scroll through the comments of any post. It’s exhausting.
