You know when you hear a song and you like it a lot, but you don't really know who the band is and for some reason you never really listen to the rest of the album, and then you hear that they dropped a new album, and you decide to listen to it all the way through, and you're just in love with it - and you love it so much that from there you listen to all their singles, eps, and albums? I think that's my experience with you. Only regret is that I didn't listen to that "first album" fully the first time around. I don't know if that makes sense. I think your point about music and comics and the similarities really struck a chord with me (pun intended).
Thanks so much, David. I really appreciate that. I know this is a weird thing to say but some of my favorite bands are bands that I didn't quite "get" at first. Not that I didn't understand them, they just didn't click for me. But sometimes years later I'd find myself still checking out their stuff. There is something hard to pinpoint about that quality, but if I could have that in my writing I'd feel pretty good about it.
No it makes sense, I totally get that. In comics, there are many that I pick up just because of artists or writers or word of mouth. But sometimes those comics that I buy on a whim, that I don't know any about, tend to be some of my favorite things. And from there, you just have to dive deeper into that team and see what else they've done, what else they'll do. I never read a Punisher book, but your book was the first, and from there I went to the X-Men with Cyclops literally having one eye, and now I'm reading Grifter comics and older stories (like We Can Never Go Home). You talked about punk, and I think your quality is almost like punk music, in how punk has that attraction of sort of commenting on the world in this power to the people - for all people, but loud and high octave. Explosive. But with heart and passion. And I think that's the best way to describe your stuff.
Yo, Matty Ro! (Sorry, you should never have called attention to it. It’s a thing now.)
I want to start by saying I’m a writer as well. Ok, maybe I’m more of a baby writer, in that I have only written a handful of things and no one really wants any of it. I guess “almost a writer” is more accurate. I hate the idea of promoting my stuff too (which is easy at the moment because of the no one wanting any of it part), but hearing you promote your stuff comes off as genuinely entertaining. I love listening to artists talk about art, musicians talk about music, and writers talking about writing. Creativity and passion are wonderful to witness and we get to see more of it when you gush about it. So I guess what I’m saying is: I understand how much it feels weird to say “you should buy this thing I did” but it’s far less weird for us on this end. I mean, most of us already are? I know I am.
Anyways, I’ll try to remind myself that I said this, just in case someone does want my stuff. No promises, though.
Hey Chrissy Su... So...Sum. Nevermind. You get it.
Thanks so much for the kind words. I am glad it doesn't come off as dry and awkward as it sounds in my head. But I agree, theoretically. I also love hearing artists talk about their craft. Enough people have said kind of enough things to me today about this that I won't quit it. For now.
As for your stuff, congrats on writing anything! That's further than most writers ever get. I mean that earnestly. Finishing something is the hardest part of the job, by far. So you've already done that. Might as well keep going. And since "nobody wants to read my stuff" is a place I inhabited for a long time, and a place I now know was always bullshit, allow me to point out that it should be "nobody knows they want to read my stuff yet." That's the actual place you are now and it's a much better place to be.
But also, I want to read your stuff. Is there a place I can read it online? Can you send it to me? How do I read it?
First off, thanks so much for the kind words, and encouragement. "Nobody knows they want to read my stuff yet" is definitely a much better place and I'm going to do my damnedest to live there until it becomes something better. Maybe even "people want to read my stuff." That would be super cool, not gonna lie.
As for my stuff that you can read (and you are under absolutely no obligation to!) I have two short pieces up on Medium at wildcardcorsair.medium.com
One is a short fiction piece about two people trapped inside a whale, but also about a lot of other things. The other is a short creative non-fiction piece about a cousin of mine who taught me to play Mortal Kombat before passing away due to leukemia. They're currently the two things I'm proudest of at the moment. I know I still have a lot of growing to do as a writer so if you end up reading them and have any pointers I would absolutely love to hear them.
Again! No obligation!
Anyways, thanks again. I look forward to reading your stuff, as always!
Sorry to be a gadfly, but what movie did your mom write? I only feel like I can ask this question because I bought 4 copies of 4 Kids Walk Into A Bank (one for each kid) and because I like slashers.

You’re doing great.

She wrote a movie called Maniac. Tom Savini's head explodes in it.
