When you stare at the Sharp Beaver the Sharp Beaver stares back!
More ways to hear me say “Umm…”!
My NYCC schedule and also everyone else’s!
The Joker is finally loose!
A family that could use your help!
Mixtape! Why does everybody look so strange?
Greetings!
Hope you all are having a great week so far. As the comics world gears up for New York Comic Con this week, my hometown show, I decided the smart move was to get the hell out of town. Took a trip out to hike, and kayak, and think I lost my ID but later discover it was in my bag the whole time. It was a much needed break. I ended up on some very MEN-like trails. If you haven’t seen MEN that won’t mean much to you, but if you have… Well you know what I was bracing for. But none of that happened. Instead I got this baller-ass sunset-
In addition to the sun going away, I also ran into this little guy.
He literally walked about 4 feet in front of me while I was looking at a funny tree. Gave no fucks that I was there. I realized as I watched him that I have never seen a porcupine in the wild before. He’s pretty cute and has strong Beaver-vibes. But, like, a sharp beaver. Nature really reuses a lot of the same designs over and over and you start to really see the budget limitations on a production like Earth. But Sharp Beaver is a good character so I can’t be mad.
In actual news, the reaction to our podcast IDEAS DON’T BLEED continues to be really great, but people keep asking us if they can listen to it somewhere other than our newsletter. And I finally have an answer and it’s a resounding “…I guess?”
If you prefer you get your podcasts on Spotify you can do so here:
And if you prefer Apple Podcasts you can get it here:
You can check out our first 3 episodes with guests KELLY THOMPSON and GERRY DUGGAN right now. As always, subscribe or follow or whatever to stay up to date. And if you have another way you like to get podcasts let us know and we (not me) will try and figure that out.
Unfortunately all good plans must eventually collapse, and my attempt to flee before NYCC have failed. Which means that I have been sucked back to the city and will actually be at the show. Sort of. I am doing one panel and then I am riding a bike away from midtown as fast as my weak baby ankles will take me.
EXPLORE THE DC MULTIVERSE - Thursday, October 6th. 1:45-2:45. Room 406.1
I will be joining the brilliant Bernard Chang, Mahmud Asrar, Dan Mora, Stephanie Williams, and my intrepid editor Ben Abernathy. Should be a fun time and, if I’m quick or Ben is jetlagged, I might even spill some details about WILDC.A.T.S. before he can stop me. So if you really want to ask me a question about how vampire powers work, yell at me for killing your fav, or get something signed as I walk outside, come hang out. It should be fun.
I like the above link to the panel info because, comparing me to the other panelists, it would appear either DC or New York Comic Con has no idea what I look like or what I write. But it also appears that they don’t know what Ben looks like or works on either, and he’s the executive editor. So I’m pretending that is just how they treat the cool kids. Makes us seem mysterious.
While I won’t be at New York Comic Con for very long, a lot of my amazing collaborators will be. I tried to put together a list but got really tired so I probably forgot some folks. But if you want to get stuff I work on signed, go track down all of these amazing folks and buy whatever they are selling.

And if you’re in town for the show, stop by friend of the newsletter Gerry Duggan’s party / exhibit for his photobook.
Go hobnob with the a who’s who of comics and buy Gerry a drink. And back his damn kickstarter!
THE JOKER: THE MAN WHO STOPPED LAUGHING #1 came out this week. The response so far has been so incredible. I don’t have a lot to add other than thank you so much to everyone who picked it up. It has been a real thrill making this book so far and I am so happy to see it connecting with people.
In sad news, comic publisher and creator Drew Ford passed away this week from Covid. Many of you may not be familiar with Drew’s work at Dover Books or It’s Alive! but he was a true champion of underground and under-appreciated works. like BREATHERS, DOSE, STRANGE ATTRACTORS, and what was supposed to be the return of one of the books that got me into comics- FISH POLICE. Drew didn’t have health insurance and leaves behind a wife who could really use your support.
I’m not sure what will happen to the catalog of IT’S ALIVE or if it will be possible to get books from them going forward, but if you’re a comics fan it’s worth checking out their books and trying to get some. If you order something beyond a PDF just please be be patient and understanding.
This is what I will be listening to as I walk through the halls of the Javits Center on Thursday, trying not to make eye contact with anyone. You should try it too.
Stay safe. Take care of each other. Wear a mask.

NYC 10/5/22
thanks for posting about drew. he and i just spoke like a week ago on future publishing plans. he championed so many classic works. sam glanzman, for example, would have probably disappeared into comic book history if not for drew. what a terrible loss.
There's a lot here, but nothing can top Sharp Beaver.
