Enter Bane! (The living one not the dead one.)
The Mixtape!
Hello!
Happy Valentine’s Day for all of you who care. Happy Monday for those of you who do not I guess. I was talking to Tyler this week about how utterly floored we both are by the response to our little book. It has been really overwhelming and we couldn’t be happier. We’re trying to think of fun ways to thank all of you, but it’s not really easy to thank random people you don’t know from all around the world. So one idea I had was doing a little sale in our online shop.
So for today only everything in our shop is half off. I didn’t bother to figure out what stuff actually costs to make, so we might be losing money on some of this, which means we probably won’t ever do this again. But for right now you can get the first 3 issues of WHAT’S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE?, the complete 4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK, DEAD DOG’S BITE, WE CAN NEVER GO HOME, and my issue of THE SILVER COIN, plus some exclusive and rare variant covers and some signed books. Click the link above or use the code StrangersLoveU at checkout on FurthestPlace.com. Sale ends tonight at Midnight Eastern time.
In addition to the response to WTFPFH? I have been really happy to see people so excited about DETECTIVE COMICS, TASK FORCE Z, DC VS. VAMPIRES, and the conclusion of JOKER PRESENTS: A PUZZLEBOX. All of those have been a blast and I’m glad some of you all are enjoying reading them almost as much as we’re enjoying making them.
Reaction to my issue of THE SILVER COIN was also really great. Michael Walsh said “it was the most beloved issue of the book ever made and probably singlehandedly renewed my love for making comics” or something. I’m paraphrasing because I only skim his messages. But the point remains, lots of nice things were said about the book. And to think, all of the other writers unanimously voted to have my name taken off the book. Suck it Chip, Kelly, Ed, Jeff, Josh, Ram, Vita, and… ummm… Walsh. My name stays on the book and now we all share a credit together forever.
Oh, and there was a mixup somewhere that credits me with writing THE SILVER COIN #9 this week. I didn’t. The brilliant Vita Ayala wrote this one and as much as I would be more than happy to steal credit for it, I don’t feel like having to explain how I got so much better at writing all of a sudden. So credit to Vita and pick it up in shops this week.
Not much other news. It was my birthday last week. Decided to spend the week catching up on movies I have been meaning to watch. My one (one-ish) sentence review of everything I watched this week below-
TITANE- Holy shit. Holy fucking shit.
NOBODY- My love for Bob Odenkirk grows more every day. And it started enormous.
ETERNALS- I got chills from one line, said off camera, by an actor we never see in the movie. Cottonmouth returns!
THE GREEN KNIGHT- I am a huge fan of David Lowery and his dreamlike movies and this may be his best yet.
THE LAST BLACK MAN IN SAN FRANCISCO- One of the most engrossing and subtly devastating films I’ve seen in a long time.
POWER OF THE DOG- Well shot, well written, well acted movie that really wows with it’s pacing and structure.
LUCKY GRANDMA- There is something so wonderful about a movie that can be simple because it knows it has more than enough charm.
THE LAST DUEL- A smart take on the Rashômon structure but with just the gnarliest haircuts imaginable. It’s like medieval Pantera roadies.
BACURAU- Multiple abrupt plot twists and tonal shifts keep you guessing in the best way. Just a wildly fun movie.
In comic shops this Wednesday is the 4th issue of WHAT’S THE FURTHEST PLACE FROM HERE? and this one is wild. We begin to really lay down what the future of this book is here and… I think it’s safe to say it’s not what people expect.
Look at that! And can I just say how insanely cool it is to have the Image Comics 30th Anniversary logo on our book.
And because a lot of people have been asking, here is an update on the deluxe editions. There has been some confusion because we shifted them from being day and date with the regular editions of the book, so people are looking for them and not realizing they aren’t out yet.
WTFPFH? #1 Deluxe- BLAKE SCHWARZENBACH / JOYCE MANOR is out now but we are reprinting it. Those reprints should be in shops in the spring we hope.
WTFPFH? #2 Deluxe- SCREAMING FEMALES / WORRIERS the records have been at Diamond Distribution since early January. We are told they should be hitting comic shops next week or the week after?
WTFPFH? #3 DELUXE- NOTHING / RESTORATIONS is in production now and we’re hoping will be in shops in April?
WTFPFH? #4 DELUXE- CHUBBY & THE GANG / SPIRITUAL CRAMP is waiting for parts to begin manufacturing.
WTFPFH? #5 DELUXE- AJJ / TIM BARRY is waiting for parts to begin manufacturing.
Over in Gotham, the 7th chapter of our HOUSE OF GOTHAM story appears in DETECTIVE COMICS #1053. We have this sweet Jorge Fornés cover to let you know that our story is entering KNIGHTFALL. Enter Bane. Hell yeah. As always come for the main story by the brilliant Mariko Tamaki, Max Raynor, & co. Stay to watch a boy’s life fall apart via Fernando Blanco, Jordie Bellaire, Rob Leigh, and myself.
I don’t think it needs much explanation. I’m listening to a lot of GULCH this week while I write. Here’s video of them destroying a parking lot in San Jose.
That’s it for me.
Stay safe. Take care of each other. Eat some chocolates.
