My friends are making a movie but need your help!
So many vampires!
Hello!
Happy Midnights day to all who observe.
First of all, I’ve had a big influx of new subscribers the past few weeks and haven’t really addressed them directly. Hi. Some of you may not know what this is or remember why you signed up. (I always assume most of our readers subscribed while very drunk.) My name is Matthew. This is my newsletter/comic publishing company/podcast outlet/chocolate milk review blog. Welcome. If that doesn’t clear things up I did an interview with my old friend Gregg over at CBR that might be illuminating. Check it out here. And thanks for signing up, even if you now regret it in the cruel light of your wicked hangover.
In other news, I heard from a lot of retailers this week that there was a flood of preorders for WILDC.A.T.S. #1, so huge thanks to all of you who got out there and asked for a copy. It makes a huge difference. If you’re not sure what WILDC.A.T.S. is all about I did a fun little interview with Tiffany from Popverse explaining that very thing.

Got some amazing response from everyone about Part 1 of our IDEAS DON’T BLEED podcast with Kelly Thompson, Ed Brisson, and myself discussing our time on UNCANNY X-MEN. Glad you all enjoyed it. Part two is even better because it has a bomb threat in it! But some of you have been listening to the podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts and noticed that it was taken down last week. I wish it was because we were “Too Dangerous to Platform!” but it was, in fact, because there was an update on our feed system and the podcasts were all deleted. Do I know what this means? Not really. But the good news is Ethan “E-Baby” Parker and Griffin “Griff Dog” Sheridan were on top of it with… not lightning speed… but with the speed of two humans who are both sick and exhausted and kind of grumpy about it. But I am happy to say we are once again back up wherever you get your podcasts.
And, as always, it helps us a lot if you rate the show and subscribe. Algorithms, people, algorithms! You don’t understand them. I don’t understand them. But we all know we need to try to beat them or they will bury us.
Lastly, we were going to be sending the never seen before first version of 4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK #1 along with a lot of behind the scenes and process stuff to paid subscribers this week. And in order to prepare for that I sent out the regular first issue to paid subscribers to read and casually asked if they’d want me to send the rest, fully expecting a lot of no’s or complete indifference. Boy was I wrong. We got a staggering number of requests for the rest of the book, which is nice… sort of. You know you can buy it in stores right, you cheap monsters?
I’m kidding!
But also… you can.
Anyway, I spoke with Tyler Boss about it and we agreed we’d rather you all read the finished, good version before you read the early, less good version. So we aren’t sending the early version out this week. But paid subscribers will be getting the whole series in their inboxes in the next few days! I just… have to find the files. Hmm.
And as a special thanks for being both patient and enthusiastic, a very rare combo these days, we’re sending our paying subscribers an additional fun, special treat tomorrow. It will be the beginning of a brand new little bonus podcast called QUICK QUIZ. It won’t be going up or available anywhere else. Our first episode features an interview with the comic creator who annoys me most in the world!!! You don’t want to miss it.
The time has come, ladies and gentlemen. Our first ever ASHCAN PRESS MOVIE CLUB will take place this weekend. And no, we are not going to name it ASH-CANNES PRESS. Thanks for the suggestion though. What is the movie? How does it work? Who brings the popcorn?
You may remember that we conducted a poll last week to ask what the best time and date was to do this. Well, an underwhelming minority of you voted for Sundays at 5pm EST. And even though it wasn’t the majority, it had more votes than any other time slot, so that’s what we’re doing! And for all you poll watchers, Sunday won by a single vote. Democracy works! (AMERICAN FRIENDS- PLEASE VOTE IN THE UPCOMING ACTUAL ELECTIONS.)
As for the movie, our first movie club movie will be the brilliant ‘71.
Written by: Gregory Burke Directed by: Yann Demange. Starring: Jack O'Connell, Paul Anderson, Richard Dormer, Sean Harris. ‘71 is one of my favorite films of the last decade. A tense, smart, character-drive, taut drama. It isn’t for the faint of heart but it’s well worth the watch.
It’s available to stream on HBOMax or to rent on Amazon Prime and probably other places. Just before 5PM on Sunday I’ll send out an email about the movie and from there you just watch it from the comfort of your home and we can chat about the movie in real-time in the comments as well watch it together. I’ll talk a little about why I chose the movie and how it impacted and influenced my work. Who knows? We might even have some special guests in the chat. Or not. I don’t know.
Bring your own popcorn. Hope to see you there.
A thing I have been so excited about for a looooong time was announced this week.
If you’ve never spoken to me, read an interview with me, or read any of my work, you may not know that Brian Michael Bendis is a huge influence and one of the main reasons I make comics. So him launching his substack with a combination of new comics (!), behind the scenes insights, personal thoughts, and an instructional class is like Christmas come early for me. I actually signed up at the top tier before he even explained what you’d get for that, but my credit card company thought it was suspicious activity and cancelled the charge. You have never heard a person yell at an automated recording as much as I did when I got that call. Don’t worry, it got sorted the next day.
The point is, if you are enjoying this newsletter or anything we’re doing over here you should definitely sign up for the JINXWORLD stuff because it will be like this but much better. And, as an added bonus, our very own Supplemen- Ethan and Griffin -our helping Brian run the show over there. So stop in and tell them all I sent you.
In other, other news of friends making cool stuff, the amazing James Tynion IV of House Tiny Onion and Elsa Charretier of House Everlasting Productions, along with PK Colinet, have a new project on Kickstarter right now.
The project is so fascinating and cool and I’m not at all jealous. It’s an exclusive comic book, an art book, and most amazingly a short horror film. If you read James and Elsa’s work you know that they are 2 of the most exciting and vibrant creators in comics and I expect this to be another gorgeous, brilliant, and groundbreaking piece of work from them.
This is going to be a very cool thing to see come together and I can’t wait for it.
DC VS. VAMPIRES: ALL OUT WAR #3 was in stores this week! This is a very fun one as what’s left of our Suicidal Squad begins their raid on Disney World The Blood Farm. This issue also has an awesome backup story by my very good old friend Danny Lore and Haining about the one and only Jack Hawksmoor! It’s worth it for that alone.
And next week brings us DC VS. VAMPIRES #10 which is one of my favorite issues so far. If you feel like getting an early glimpse, the great AIPT has you covered.
That’s it for me. Paid subscribers, let me know if you like the new bonus podcast. Hope to see all of you Sunday for our giant date.
Stay safe. Take care of each other. Don’t put weird stuff on your popcorn.

Sweet! I’ll be sure to take my multivitamin.
You and Tyler should do a 4 Kids QnA. 👀
